"Free As A Bird" was originally recorded in 1977 as a demo by John Lennon at his apartment in the Dakota building. The original demo by Lennon, was just an idea he had for a song, and was not complete.

Paul McCartney had asked Yoko Ono if she had any unreleased Lennon material for a project he was working on, and she presented him with a tape consisting of four songs, "Free As A Bird" being one of the songs she gave him.

The 3 remaining members of The Beatles, and their production team, then set to work to finish the track that Lennon couldn't, and as of April 2010, "Free As A Bird" is the only recording that has John Lennon, Paul McCartney & George Harrison singing separate lead vocals on.
