"West End Girls" was originally released as the debut single by the Pet Shop Boys in 1984, where it had at best, moderate success in America.
It wasn't until it was re-released by the Pet Shop Boys in 1985 that it went on to have the success it deserved, reaching No.1 on the UK Charts in November 1985, and eventually the No.1 spot in America in May 1986.
In 2005, 20 years after it's release, the song was awarded 'song of the decade' between the years 1985 and 1994, by the British academy of composers & songwriters.
