The Tom Robinson Band released "2-4-6-8 Motorway" as their debut single, and it peaked at No.5 on the UK singles Charts, in October 1977.

The band hit the gig circut right in the middle of the punk explosion during 1976/77, and their live shows were soon getting rave reviews, A&R men started attending their gigs, and it wasn't long before they were signed By EMI.

Tom Robinson later stated "Within 9 months we'd made the transition from signing on at the dole office to top of the pops and radio 1"
