"Jolene" became Dolly Parton's 2nd No.1 single on the American Billboard Charts in 1973. The song also hit No.7 on the UK Charts in the same year.

Parton has said that the inspiration for the "Jolene" character was a tall, red-headed bank teller who Parton believed was flirting with her husband.

Her husband's apparent vulnerability to the teller's charm was indicated by his sudden interest in making frequent trips to the bank.
