"Maggie May" was written by Rod Stewart & Martin Quittenton, and was released as a single by Stewart from his 1971 album "Every Picture Tells A Story"

The song was his first No.1 hit as a solo performer and kick started his solo career. It reached the top of the UK Charts in Septemeber 1971.

A famous live performance of the song on Top of the Pops saw Stewart joined onstage by legendary DJ John Peel, who pretended to play the mandolin. (the mandolin player on the recording was Ray Jackson of Lindisfarne)
