"Ain't No Sunshine" was written and first recorded by Bill Withers and was released as a single from his 1971 album "Just As I Am" going on to peak at No.6 on the American Billboard Chart.
When Withers recorded the song, he was still working in a factory making toilet seats for aeroplanes.
He originally intended to write more lyrics for the portion of the song where he repeats the phrase "I Know" 26 times, but the other musicians told him to leave it the way it was.
