"For Once In My Life" was written by Ron Miller and Orlando Murden in 1967 for Motown records and was originally recorded by Jean DuShon.
Stevie Wonder's version was originally recorded in the summer of 1967, and was meant to be released that same year, but the head of Motown records (Berry Gordy) decided against it, so the release was put on hold.
It was eventualy released in October 1968, and was a No.2 hit on the American Hot 100, and a No.3 hit on the UK chart.
