"Winchester Cathedral" was a No.1 hit song in America, and a No.4 hit in the UK released in late 1966 by The New Vaudeville Band, a novelty group created by the song's writer, Geoff Stephens.

Although recorded entirely by session musicians, when the song became an international hit, an actual band had to be assembled.

The band then toured extensively under the guidance of Peter Grant, who later went on to manage The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin.
